With the World Cup going on you'd think there would be a lot to talk about running around my sleep deprived mind. Unfortunately, often times the sleep-deprived mind doesn't care about thinking so much as it cares about one thing only, sleeping. Alas, this is what it feels like I have been doing for the last couple of weeks in regard to the A-League. So this will be my effort to make up for lost time in the past couple of weeks.
Now on autopilot mode let me tell you all about news you've probably already read and if you haven't may someone bless you for allowing me to seem a fount of knowledge at this time. Anyway, there have been some new stories out of Vancouver of late concerning the Whitecaps and raising the Titanic left behind by that fellow Stadnyk. Apparently the previous owners never managed to botch the job quite as magnificently as he did considering his $800,000 loss was only $250,000 to the previous owners.
Now, assuming he knew what he was in for, i.e. an almost inevitable $250,000 loss, why did he want to put himself in a position to lose more? No, seriously, I don't have the answer. Would anyone like to share? Thanks. Hopefully, the league, with the help of Bobby Lenarduzzi, know full well what they're getting into and will just get on with it. The job needs doing and I think several among the Vancouver faithful are reasonably confident that El Bobby can get the job done. The voices in my head also tell me that the league is happy about his role in all this so far as well. So it will only be a matter of time until matters work themselves out in Vancouver.
Speaking of matters of time I guess I should address missing out on all of your company last week. Well, it seems something strange had to happen as the U.S. wound up winning their way into the quarterfinals of the World Cup and for one of the very few instances since I began doing this I was fairly speechless. Worry not fearless readers, the old gift of gab seems to have found me once again. Now whether or not this yammering will wind up making any sense remains to be seen. Either way it has been an interesting soccer odyssey for yours truly from the early mornings to the return of working life.
At any rate, after extolling the virtues of the Seattle Sounders seemingly eons ago the Cincinnati Riverhawks promptly went out and turned the tables on the West frontrunners. I guess someone must have gotten Cincy a bit motivated, eh? Either way, Seattle still holds their lead and Cincinnati are trying to remain in the thick of a playoff race. This upset could provide an interesting back-story should these clubs meet again come playoff time.
Down South there have been some interesting developments, particularly a three-week layoff for the Charlotte Eagles. They'll look to shake the rust off their wings in their next match against Pittsburgh where they'll also be hoping to end their recent winless skid. Meanwhile, their Southern Derby neighbors, Charleston and Atlanta, meet this weekend in a crucial home and home series if either team wants to get a firm grip on their division.
So you see I can begin on a completely unrelated tangent and wind my way to some sort of vague point. Then again I did finally get a nap in. I suggest you all do the same after trying to make sense of this week's offering from yours truly. That being said congratulations to Bruce Arena and his team for making all U.S. soccer fans proud. I can finally sleep again!
