Martins leads as hounds win

Thiago Martins lead the way for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, with a pair of goals and an assist in their 5-0 opening game in Charlotte, before 675 at the Pine High School in Mathews, N.C. on Friday. The 'hounds got off to a fast start when Corey Woolfolk, one of the new additions, headed a cross from Martins past Eagles goalkeeper Dean Short in the 4th minute of play to give the 'hounds a 1-0 lead.

It was 2-0 in the 13th when Justin Evans, a returning player from the original team, scored from Derek Potteiger, off a Potteiger throw-in, which went to Martins, before the Penn State alumnus had it returned to earn the assist.

Two minutes later Martins scored off a cross from mid-fielder Gary DePalma to make it 3-0.

Martins completed the first half onslaught when he beat Short in the 32nd minute, after taking a deflection from Charlotte's Andy McDermott, who had intercepted a cross from DePalma.

The final goal came in the 70th when Ricardo Villar, formerly of Hampton Roads, deflected a shot by Paul Dolinsky past Short.

Randy Dedini earned the shutout win for the 'hounds, who next travel to Atlanta for a Saturday game at 6. The hounds are currently in first in the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference(1-0).
