Thiago Martins lead the way for the
Pittsburgh Riverhounds, with a pair of goals and an
assist in their 5-0 opening game in Charlotte,
before 675 at the Pine High School in Mathews, N.C.
on Friday.
The 'hounds got off to a fast start when Corey
Woolfolk, one of the new additions, headed a cross
from Martins past Eagles goalkeeper Dean Short in
the 4th minute of play to give the 'hounds a 1-0
lead.
It was 2-0 in the 13th when Justin Evans, a
returning player from the original team, scored from
Derek Potteiger, off a Potteiger throw-in, which
went to Martins, before the Penn State alumnus had
it returned to earn the assist.
Two minutes later Martins scored off a cross from
mid-fielder Gary DePalma to make it 3-0.
Martins completed the first half onslaught when he
beat Short in the 32nd minute, after taking a
deflection from Charlotte's Andy McDermott, who had
intercepted a cross from DePalma.
The final goal came in the 70th when Ricardo
Villar, formerly of Hampton Roads, deflected a shot
by Paul Dolinsky past Short.
Randy Dedini earned the shutout win for the
'hounds, who next travel to Atlanta for a Saturday
game at 6. The hounds are currently in first in the
Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference(1-0).
