Pittsburgh’s Drought at Frontier Continues

ROCHESTER, NY, June 9, 2003 – Pittsburgh come to Frontier Field in the hopes of finally getting a win and breaking their Rochester curse. So far in this match up history the best Pittsburgh has managed at Frontier Field has been a tie.

In the 9th minute Rochester Looked to take the lead when, Steenkamp crossed a perfect ball into the box. Ian fuller was able to beat everyone to the ball and got a nice head on it. However, Pittsburgh’s Keeper, T.J. Hanning, was able to get in from of the shot.

Not to be out down Pittsburgh quickly countered and less than a minute later sent a sure goal in. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh the shot hit the upper corner of the post and rebounded harmlessly away.

Rochester continued to create chances and Doug Miller was inside the 6 when Pittsburgh’s defense came up with the big tackle to win and clear the ball. Pittsburg began to dominate the offense after that point forcing Andracki to make 4 saves by the halftime whistle.

The first half saw both sides control the ball about the same amount of time while Rochester’s midfield and forwards appeared to be working on different pages.

Almost 10 minutes into the second half, the deadlock would be broken when Pittsburgh did them selves in with an own goal in the 54th minute. This was all Rochester needed to win as the attacks from Pittsburg dropped dramatically and they never force Andracki to make a save in the final 45.

Each side could not get any sort of rhythm going as the official was calling every foul in the book and disrupted the flow of the game. In the 76th minute one of these fouls would lead to Rochester’s second goal.

Substitute Temoc Suarez lined up over a free kick outside Pittsburgh’s 18. Placing it perfectly, Temoc bet the ball around the left side of the wall and low to the ground. Hanning reacted too late and was not able to save the shot.

In the 80th minute Pittsburgh almost got a goal but defender Craig Demmin was able to slide and get his foot in the way at the last moment. Few other chances were created by either side. The best of these chances came just before the final whistle when Rochester’s Viktor Paco missed a wide open on goal.

Despite the defense being suspect so far this year Rochester continued their dominance over Pittsburgh at Frontier Field. With the season well under way, Rochester looks to be getting some rhythm that they will need to fend of the rest of their division.
