Rochester Draws with Richmond

ROCHESTER, NY, July 28, 2003 – After a tough road loss to Richmond earlier in the week, Rochester looked to finally avenge last year’s playoff loss and continue to keep pressure on Montreal.

The match appeared to start off in Rochester’s favor, as a stitched up Lenin Steenkamp sent a head just over the corner. Quickly the tide would turn for both sides. A few minutes later Andracki was forced to push a shot over the crossbar. On the ensuing corner Rochester cleared the ball and a streaking Doug Miller was one on one with Richmond’s Doug Warren. With a Richmond defender hot on his heels, Miller sent a shot to his far side, but Warren was able to stretch out and deflect the shot.

The missed opportunity would end in the 11th minute. Richmond was awarded a free kick deep inside the Rhinos’ half. The kick was sent to the far post where Bobo meet it with his head and buried it past an out of position Andracki.

It would not take the Rhinos long to retaliate, as Lavrinenko ended his absence from the starting lineup in style, scoring off a corner by Mladenov in the 19th minute.

Both teams settled down and tried to have a more even pace to the match. The keepers and kept both sides level as they broke for halftime.

At the start of the second half both side looked to continue the slower pace, and waiting patiently for any crack in the defense. Rochester would blink first as Craig Demmin got beat, with the help of a stumble on the pitch and Kevin Jeffrey took the ball all the way to the endline. Once there he sent the ball across the net and out of the closing Andracki’s reach. Paul Lekics was there to tap home Richmond’s second goal of the night.

At this point Richmond fell back into a defensive shell challenging Rochester to score. Richmond’s defense would not let to forward turn with the ball and cut out any threat that came their way.

Late into stoppage time Rochester was awarded a corner that Mladenov took once again. He sent a nice ball into the box that got bounced around a few time. Finally Wilson was able to get a good foot on the ball and even the match at 2.

Neither side could manage another goal in the two overtimes period, and both sides are happy to come away with a point for their efforts.
