Montreal Takes First Place

ROCHESTER, NY, July
12, 2004
Rochester and Montreal faced off to determine who would have possession of
first place in the division on Friday night. Rochester lost in Montreal two
days earlier and looked to regain their footing.
The match began with both sides going back and forth and neither
generating any shots until well after the 10 minute mark. Not until the 24th minute did any
shot force a keeper to make a save as Rochesters Corey Woolfolk blasted a shot
home, but Montreals Greg Sutton was there to make the save. Montreal could
manage little offense and when they did their shots never forced Zagar to make
a save. Rochester almost got on the sheet again in the 35th minute
but Sutton was there again to make the save.
The second half would be a different story as Montreal took
control of the match. They held Rochester to only two shots in the second half
while they took 5. Despite this increase
in offense the match looked to end in a tie until in the 86th minute
a long ball was sent into Rochesters box. Rochester Defender Carlos Semedo
could not get a touch on it and it went over him to a waiting Fred Commodore.
Commodore took aim as Zagar tried to cut off the angle, but Commodore put a
nice shot into the top of the net.
Not wanting to lose two games in a row, Rochester used the remaining
few minutes of the game to go on the offensive. Their best chance to equalize
the match came in the 88th minute when Corey Woolfolk sent in a high
lob that looked to sneak in just under the crossbar, but Sutton was able to use
his height to get to the ball.
Montreal now holds first place in the division and Rochester has
another game in 2 days, against defending A-League Champions the Charleston
Battery.
