Rochester Holds on to Win

ROCHESTER, NY, July
12, 2004
– Having lost their last two matches, Rochester needed to win to keep pace with
Montreal. Charleston has been a disappointment all year and need to start
winning if they hope to even have an outside shot at the playoffs.
Despite the need for both sides to get all the points, the match
began slowly. When either side did manage to take a shot, rarely did they
challenge the keeper. This lackluster effort by both sides may have contributed
to Rochester’s first half goal. Pato Aguilera was 25-30 yards out when he
blasted a shot. It looked at if Charleston’s Dusty Hudock thought it was a play
into the box. However, too late he realized that it was a shot and it found a
home in the upper corner.
The second half played showed that Charleston made adjustments in
an attempt to stay in the match. They dominated play and created far more
chances than Rochester, but Rochester’s defense remained solid. Rochester’s
Aguilera almost got on the score sheet again in the 57th minute, but
Charleston managed to deflect the shot away.
With the clock ticking down, Charleston unleashed an all out
assault on Rochester. In the 89th minute Soren Johnson, who was in
for Theo Zagar who was on National Team Duty for Canada, was forced to make a
save that looked like a sure goal. Less than a minute later he was called upon
again to rob Charleston of the equalizer.
