ROCHESTER, NY, June 3, 2005 With the losing streak behind
them and a positive Canadian road trip (1 win and 1 draw in 2 matches), Rochester
demolished the previously undefeated Timbers at Frontier Field.
Pressure
Early and Often
Rochester started the game
wasting no time with Kirk Wilson missing a chance in the 3 minute. These were
followed up by chances in the 9, 10, 13, and 14 minutes.
The
Chink in the Armor
With so much pressure up top,
Portland was never able to mount a good counter and finally their weakness was
exposed When Kirk Wilson was able to catch the defense flat footed and snuck
the ball behind them. A streaking Bolanos runs onto the ball and is able to
gently push it past the keeper.
Bolanos returned the assist to
Wilson 3 minutes later when he was able to get the ball to a streaking Wilson
who easily put it past the stranded Portland Keeper
Chances
Wasted
Rochester would waste other
opportunities in the first half, including an empty net miss as well as a ball
rolling just in front of the goalmouth.
Cruise
Control
In the second half, Rochester
looked content to work the ball as much as possible and not allow Portland to get
back into the game. After some initial pressure at the start of the second
half, Portland would only really threaten Rochester late in the game.
In the 82, Rochester keeper
Scott Vallow was called for pulling a man down in the penalty area. The penalty
kick was converted, resulting in Portlands only goal of the match.

Improvement
Now that Rochester has all of
their players in place and they have had time to work together, they are
starting to come together as a team. After a very disappointing start to the
season, Rochester has scored 8 goals in their last 2 matches and managed a 0-0
draw in Montreal against the defending champions.
