Kirk Wilson’s Goal Makes the Difference Versus Minnesota

ROCHESTER, NY, July 8, 2005 – Once both A-League powerhouses, the Minnesota Thunder rolled into Rochester looking to kick start a disappointing season thus far. Rochester hoped to remain on track, with first place in its sites.

Pressure Early and Often

Rochester started the game wasting no time with Kirk Wilson missing a chance in the 3’ minute. Forward Greg Howes tested Thunder ’keeper Joe Warren in the 12’, but the shot was easily covered. Warren frustrated Rhinos forwards and midfielders all evening.

Keeping Things Level

As mentioned above, Minnesota ‘keeper Joe Warren came ready to play. He continually frustrated Rhinos’ forward Greg Howes throughout the match, most notably in the first half, where Howes wasted 4 good chances, with the last coming as a gift at the edge of the penalty area, only to be placed too high. Credit Warren’s height for that.

Offside Confusion

The assistant referee made some questionable calls regarding the offside law throughout the match. This burned Rochester in the first half, but after Wilson’s game winner was scored, it hurt Minnesota’s flashy forwards in the second half of the match far worse.

Wilson to the Rescue

Kirk Wilson’s goal in the 50’ secured maximum points for Rochester on this night, with a nice header from a cross by Howes. While Howes failed to find the back of the net, his setup to Wilson was timely.
