Tired Rhinos Settle for Tie

ROCHESTER, NY, July 15, 2005 – After a long string of matches in humid weather, Rochester fielded a tired squad to face the Seattle Sounders.

Coming out Fast

Rochester wasted no time a looked to start the scoring early with John Ball’s shot in the 3rd minute. If it were not for the post, the Rhinos would have taken the early lead.

Not to be outdone, Seattle came right back and moments later forced Vallow to make a save to keep the game level.

Keepers Shine

Both sides went back and forth and each had good looks at the goal. If it were not for the stellar work of the keepers, this match would have turned into a goal fest.

The Rhinos looked to have the better chances but they had unlucky bounces. Some spectacular keeping by Seattle’s Burpo thwarted them at every opportunity.

Ending on a High Note

Seattle managed to break the dead lock in the 43rd minute when Nusum was able to place the ball past an already outstretched Vallow. Seattle almost managed another goal in stoppage time but Vallow was able to push it over the bar.

Heat and Fatigue Set In

Both sides, while still fast, look dogged in the 2nd half with much of the play in the midfield and goal opportunities quickly being snuffed out.

In an attempt to reinvigorate the team, Coach Laurie Calloway went to the Rhinos bench and put Rey Martinez in for the ineffective Greg Howes.

A few moments later this moved paid off, as Martinez’s fresh legs carried him past the tired Sounders defense and he was able to put a low hard shot past the ‘keeper to even up the match

Vallow Shines One More Time

Having been spectacular though the match, Scott Vallow proved his worth when he kept the score level in the 88th minute. A sure goal was heading for the upper corner, but a leaping Vallow was outstretched and able to make the save.
