Rhinos’ Dry Spell Continues

Winless in Their Last 3, Rochester Settles for a Point with Richmond

ROCHESTER, NY, July 30, 2005 – A few weeks back, in muggy Richmond, Virginia, the Rhinos were coming into town riding high on a solidifying lineup and a win streak. Richmond, trying to hold its frontrunner position while the Rhinos and Montreal Impact nipped at its heels (with Seattle in the thick of it as well), held Rochester scoreless as the teams drew. Replay it week later, only play the match in muggy Rochester, and the result’s the same: 0-0.

Uninspired First Half

Rochester had five shots, with two good chances in the first half, with near misses by midfielder Kirk Wilson in the 8’ (wide shot on an empty goal), and a half hour later when midfielder Stoian Mladenov nailed the crossbar with a high powered shot. Wilson headed the rebound into the goal, but was in an offside position when he touched the ball. Richmond mustered five shots as well, but none of these chances seemed threatening. Former Rhinos player Chris Carrieri was a non-factor for the Kickers.

More of the Same

The crossbar turned out to be the Rhinos’ enemy this evening, notably when midfielder Rene Rivas shot off it in the 48’ from a Rhinos corner kick that was nicely delivered to him. A collective groan overcame the 11,112 spectators on-hand for the match, as complacency appeared to be settling in on both sides of the pitch.

A Goalkeepers’ Match

Both ‘keepers played very well tonight, turning away some very nice attempts at goal. One point can be appreciated, as the game appeared even throughout, yet many frustrated fans were seen leaving Frontier Field tonight knowing that maximum points were well needed, especially in an effort to break Rochester’s winless streak.
