Mariners’ and Islanders Play to 2-2 Tie

Robert Berwick, uslfans.com match reporter

VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA- In an exciting fast paced game at the Sportsplex, the Virginia Beach Mariners and Puerto Rico Islanders played to a 2-2 tie.  Virginia Beach’s Leepaul Scroggins opened the scoring in the eighth minute of play on a powerful strike.  However the Islanders came roaring back four minutes later on a goal by Dario Husein.  The Mariners took a 2-1 lead into halftime when Alan Woods headed in a goal in the 24th minute.  The second half picked up where the first half left off.  Both clubs had near misses and shots ring off the post.  Virginia Beach gave up a soft goal in the 53rd minute to Puerto Rico’s Alen Marcina.  With both teams having good runs, the game was close up until the final minutes.  Virginia Beach’s defense drew the Islanders offside ten times.  The Mariners poured on the shots throughout the game, outshooting the Islanders 16 to 6.
