The Battery has added another proven scorer to its striker force, signing former Hampton Roads Mariners captain Seamus Donnelly.
Last season, the 5-11 Donnelly had 14 goals and one assist for the rival Mariners, following his 12 goals and three assists in 1999 and 11 goals and one assist in his '98 A-League soccer debut season.
"There is so much to Seamus Donnelly," Battery coach Alan Dicks said of the 29-year-old from Dublin, Ireland. "His off-the-ball work is terrific and his finishing is superb. I think he will soon become a favorite of the Battery soccer fans."
Donnelly, a fan favorite in Hampton Roads, departed from a Mariners team that dropped to the USL D3 Pro League after being in the second-division A-League the last three seasons.
In 2000, when he was second only to former Major League Soccer performer Saul Martinez among Mariners goal scorers, Donnelly scored two goals against Charleston and added one assist.
Also, Alan Woods, a Battery starting defender last year, is not returning to Charleston this season.
