U.S. Open Cup Berth Lingers For Silverbacks
Experiment with web text cast

ATLANTA (May 24, 2001)- The Atlanta Silverbacks’ U.S. Open Cup fate has come down to the wire with one qualifying game remaining Friday, May 25th at the University of Richmond Stadium. The Silverbacks will face the Kickers in both a symbolic and important match.

Richmond a former home for Dugan…

Silverbacks’ Head Coach John Dugan faces a personal rivalry any time he heads to Richmond. John spent his collegiate career at Virginia Commonwealth University in the heart of downtown Richmond. John was rostered with the Kickers for the ’93, ’94, and ’98 seasons recording 14 goals, 5 assists and 33 points. John will also coach opposite former Kickers’ teammate and current friend and coaching peer, Kickers’ Head Coach Leigh Cowlishaw.

Important match ahead…

In order to qualify for the U.S. Open Cup, Atlanta sits in an almost must win situation against the Kickers. If the Silverbacks come away with a victory they will jump ahead of the trailing Nashville Metros with an insurmountable point lead in their group. If the Silverbacks fall to the Kickers, the Nashville/Greenville match on June 1st will determine their U.S. Open Cup fate.

Silverbacks test text cast…

Silverbacks’ fans will have access to periodic game updates by visiting the Silverbacks’ homepage at www.atlantasilverbacks.com during the game. The text cast will be a test run for the club, and future text casts will be dependent on quality, feedback and feasibility. Silverbacks’ President Pete Petersen is very excited to offer this service to the fans. “This is a much improved club from last season. We are doing a lot of things that haven’t been done before. This is a great service to provide for our fans at home while the team is on the road. We will use this as a test run for future text casts and web casts.”
