ATLANTA (September 28, 2001) – The Atlanta Silverbacks announced today their 2001 season honors naming Jason Annicchero Most Valuable Player and Sean-Michael Callahan Rookie of the Year. The California natives joined the Silverbacks at the beginning of the 2001 season and each played an integral part in helping the Silverbacks to their first ever playoff berth.
Annicchero, recently named to the 2001 A-League Second Team, led the Silverbacks in minutes played with 2,325 in 26 games. The solid defender anchored a Silverbacks’ back line that kept their opponents scoreless in seven (7) matches, the most shutouts in franchise history. The 6’3 graduate of Santa Clara University is a regular winner of season awards earning Defender of the Year honors in 1999 for the Seattle Sounders and Newcomer of the Year honors in 2000 for the San Diego Flash.
A-League rookie Sean-Michael Callahan made a name for himself during the Silverbacks 2001 season. Seeing minimal minutes in the early part of the season, the left footed midfielder finished third on the Silverbacks’ scoring list with seven (7) goals against A-league opponents and two more in the Silverbacks 2-1 defeat of Major League Soccer’s Tampa Bay Mutiny. Also a graduate of Santa Clara University, Callahan participated in two NCAA Final Four Championships in ’98 and ’99.
Silverbacks President Stephen Pratten comments on the performances of these players, “Both Jason and Sean-Michael had standout seasons. They are two players who we respect tremendously, and we look forward to their return.”
