Atlanta Silverbacks Ink 2001 A-League Defender Of The Year Gilbert Jean-Baptiste And MLS Defender Alan Woods

ATLANTA (February 28, 2002) – The Atlanta Silverbacks announced today two important additions to the back line signing the 2001 A-League Defender of the Year Gilbert Jean-Baptiste and former New England Revolution defensive midfielder Alan Woods to three-year contracts. Woods, a former MLS defender, will complement the Silverbacks’ defense that now includes three All A-League selections with Jean-Baptiste, Jason Annicchero, and James Wall.

Jean-Baptiste joins the Silverbacks after three outstanding seasons with the Charleston Battery. He earned All A-League First Team honors in 2001, was named to the All A-League Second Team both in 1999 and 2000, and earned Battery Rookie of the Year honors in 1999. Jean-Baptiste spent his college career at Southern Connecticut State. In 1998 he led the Owls to the NCAA Division II National Championship, was a first team All-American, and was named the NCAA Division II Defender of the Year.

Alan Woods comes to Atlanta after a solid 2001 season with the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer. He played in 18 games for the Revolution in a defensive midfield role, starting 15 of those and compiling 1,475 minutes. Woods was a first round draft pick for the Colorado Rapids in the 2000 MLS SuperDraft. A graduate of Clemson University, he earned First Team All-ACC honors and First Team All-South honors his senior season, and helped the Tigers to the NCAA Quarterfinals his junior year.

Silverbacks' Head Coach Brett Mosen comments, "The signing of these two players proves just how committed we are to putting a top quality team on the pitch this season." Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.


· The Atlanta Silverbacks completed their 2002 tryouts this weekend with the invitational tryout Feb 22-24 at Georgia Perimeter College.

· Atlanta Silverbacks players Jason Annicchero and Carlos Parra will participate in the National Education Association’s “Read Across America Week” this week by visiting local schools.

· The Atlanta Silverbacks announced today the release of the following players: Sylvan Bednar, Sean-Michael Callahan, Eddie Rodriguez, Seth Marks, David Clemente, Ryan Walker, Danny Care, Ian Checcio, Randy Merkel, and Roberto Najarro.
