Battery's Watson honored

Staff and wire reports

Battery defender Mark Watson was named to the latest A-League Team of the Week for his strong work in Charleston's 3-0 home victory over the El Paso Patriots on Saturday.

Watson, a veteran Canadian international, scored the first goal and helped keeper Dusty Hudock to his fifth shutout of the season.

Battery forward Paul Conway, the league's goals and points leader in 2001, is among three players tied for second in the league in points with 11 apiece.

Seattle's Darren Sawatzky, a former Battery performer, leads with 16 points after scoring four goals in a two-win week for the Sounders that earned him A-League Player of the Week honors. Conway is tied for second with Atlanta's Brian Piesner (a 2001 Battery player) and Charlotte's Dustin Swinehart.

The second-place Battery plays host to the Charlotte Eagles at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Blackbaud Stadium on Daniel Island. The teams complete their two-game, home-and-home series at 8 p.m. Saturday in Charlotte. The two-match set also will decide which of the Southeast Division rivals advances to the U.S. Open Cup.
