Battery shuts down Silverbacks - BATTERY 2, SILVERBACKS 0

ATLANTA-The Charleston Battery bounced back from Friday night's scoreless tie against Atlanta at Blackbaud Stadium to defeat the Silverbacks, 2-0, Saturday night on the road.

The win improves Charleston to 15-2-3 (68 points) and solidifies its position atop the A-League's Southeast division. With the loss, Atlanta drops to 12-9-1 (56 points), good for second place in the division.

The first goal was scored in the 42nd minute. Jamaican defender Linval Dixon drove a free kick to the top of the 18-yard box. Midfielder John Jones rose to meet the cross and snapped a header past Atlanta goalkeeper Cole Burg-man.

In the 65th minute, Charleston doubled its lead and again it was Jones who provided the goal. The Battery sent a corner kick into the box and Steve Kline headed it goal-ward and Jones poked it past the keeper for his second score of the night.

The Battery's defense held firm for the remainder of the match, giving goalkeeper Dusty Hudock his league-leading 10th shutout of the year.

The Battery's next home match is Thursday night against the reigning champion Rochester Raging Rhinos at 7:30 p.m. For ticket information, call 971-4625.
