Silverbacks Can’t Get Kickers Monkey Off Their Backs

Lose in First Round of Playoffs 3-2 on Aggregate

Atlanta (Sep 8, 2002)  - The Atlanta Silverbacks were eliminated by the Richmond Kickers tonight, after losing the second leg of the first round playoff game to the visiting Kickers 2-1. The loss follows a 1-1 draw up in Richmond on Thursday, resulting in an aggregate score of 3-2.

Richmond move on to face the Charleston Battery, that game will be played Friday night at Blackbaud Stadium.

Richmond’s first goal came in just the eighth minute, during a period of intense pressure by the Kickers. Kevin Jeffries, by far Richmond’s most dangerous player, received the ball in open space, beat his player around the corner and ripped a shot that banged off the far post. The rebound fell to an Atlanta player who could only half clear the ball of danger and the kick fell to Josh Henderson who calmly skipped the ball into the home team’s net.

The goal completely changed the nature of the game as Richmond let off on the pressure and allowed Atlanta to come to them. The Silverbacks rose to the bait and poured on the offense, ticking up minutes of possession, but with little to show for it.

Just before half, the Kickers pounced on a defensive breakdown to make it 2-0. Marco Feruzzi headed a misplayed ball to Kevin Jeffries whose speed created the one-yard of space he needed to rip a shot just inside Jeff Cassar’s nearside post.

The second half proved all one-way pressure, with the Kickers enjoying the brief counter-attacks that a two-goal lead afforded them. Unfortunately Atlanta’s breakthrough came with just a few minutes on the clock. Nice build up work sent Jordy Broder into the box and as the defense moved to close him down, he squared the ball to John Barry Nusum who took the ball on his right foot and fired his shot past a sprawling Ronnie Pascal.

The Kickers have dominated the season series with the Silverbacks, winning the regular season matchups 4-0 and the post season 1-1-0.
