First Round Playoffs - Game Two of Two
Vancouver Wins Series on Aggregate Score 2-0
Swangard Stadium, Burnaby, BC (attendance: 4,060)
The Whitecaps knocked off the Portland Timbers 1-0 on a rain-soaked night in Burnaby to win the two-game total-goal series 2-0. Vancouver now advances to face the Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference Semi-Finals, with the first game of the series going Friday, September 13, at Swangard Stadium in a 7:30 p.m. start. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster at 604-280-4400. Game two will be Sunday in Seattle.
Steve Kindel scored the game's only goal in the 52nd minute as he headed in a rebound following a great shot by Player of the Game Dave Morris. Morris also had the best chance of the first half as his quick shot from 12 yards in the 11th minute was barely kicked out by goalkeeper Matt Napoleon. Whitecaps keeper Jim Larkin got his second straight start and second straight shutout as he made 5 saves on 11 shots. Despite the even shot count of 11 apiece, Vancouver did a good job containing the explosive Timbers offence.
Game two of Vancouver's series with Seattle goes Sunday, September 15, at Seattle's Memorial Stadium in a 5:00 p.m. start. The other half of the conference bracket sees the Minnesota Thunder face the Milwaukee Rampage.
At half-time, the Whitecaps announced their post-season awards as selected by the Supporters Club. These included Player of the Year to Dave Morris, Golden Boot as top scorer to Jason Jordan for the second year in a row, the Gerry Nakatsuka Midfielder of the Year award to Steve Kindel for the second year in a row, Defender of the Year to Geordie Lyall, Rookie of the Year to defender Kevan Cameron, and Unsung Hero to midfielder Oliver Heald. Midfielder Jeff Clarke meanwhile finished first in aggregate voting in Three Star selections by the media over the course of the season.
In out of town action, the Montreal Impact got past the Charlotte Eagles on penalty kicks after winning 1-0 at home to level the aggregate score in their series 1-1. The Richmond Kickers meanwhile won 2-1 on the road over the Atlanta Silverbicks to take their series 3-2. Montreal will play the Rochester Raging Rhinos while Richmond will face the Charleston Battery in the two Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.
