ATLANTA – The Atlanta Silverbacks today announced the signing of Martin Klinger to a 3-year contract, cementing the services of the former Project 40 player for the 2003-2005 seasons.
Many Silverbacks fans may recognize the lanky forward, who suited up for Atlanta for three games during the 2002 season. Klinger was on loan to the Silverbacks from the New York/New Jersey MetroStars during his time in Atlanta.
The 5’ 11” striker has an impressive pedigree. His father, Fausto Klinger, played for the Ecuadorian National Team in the early 80's and his brother (also named Fausto) played college and pro soccer in the United States as well.
Klinger grew up in Kearny, New Jersey, which was also home to Major League Soccer icons John Harkes, Tony Meola and Tab Ramos. He was selected in the 2001 MLS SuperDraft with the 46th overall pick (fourth round).
The Cuenta, Ecuador native had brief stints with the Ecuadorian club Espoli and Penarol in Uruguay. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in January of 2001 before entering the SuperDraft.
The 2001 season was his rookie year in the MLS, where he played in nine regular season games for the MetroStars, collecting two goals and one assist.
