(Harrisburg, PA, March 7, 2005) – The Harrisburg City Islanders will open 2005 Training Camp on Tuesday, March 8, indoors at the “In The Net” facility in Palmyra.
Camp will officially begin at 8:30 a.m. and run until 10:30 a.m. The club’s training schedule for this week (and the rest of March) is as follows:
Tuesday, 8:30 – 10:30 a.m.
Wednesday, 9:00 – 11:00 p.m.
Thursday, 8:30 – 10:30 a.m.
Friday, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Roughly 20 players will be on hand for the first day of Camp, a handful of whom were invited back after impressing the coaching staff during open tryouts held in early January and this past weekend. Among them will be local products such as defender Dustin Bixler (a graduate of Red Land High School and Lock Haven University) and forward Bernie
Showers (Northern Lebanon, St. Francis), who will join the veterans and youngsters competing for spots on Harrisburg’s 2005 roster.
“It always feels good to get camp underway,” said City Islanders Head Coach Bill Becher. “We can now focus squarely on finalizing our roster and preparing for our season opener.”
The Islanders will kick off their second season in Cincinnati on Saturday, April 16, with their home opener set for Saturday, April 23, at Skyline Sports Complex against Pittsburgh at 7:35 p.m. Prior to that, the club is scheduled to play five exhibition games, beginning on Saturday, March 19, at Holuba Hall on the Penn State campus.
The team already has the following nine players under contract for 2005: goalkeeper Dave Kern; defenders Mike Henning, John Lapore, Pete Shellenberger, and Craig Tyrrell; and midfielders Mike Feniger, Steve Fisher, Derek Potteiger, and Moffat Oduor. Midfielder David Schofield and forward Matt Tanzini have also agreed to terms.
