The Eagles hosted Western Wass in front of a record high crowd of over 1500, part of a doubleheader at Charlotte Christian stadium. Western Mass came into this match with a 4-6-3 record off a recent loss to Wilmington 4-0. The Eagles, in the midst of a tight division race, with a record of 4-5-4, are working hard to find ways to consistently win games. After their loss to Richmond, this important win and 3 points strengthens the Eagles aspirations for a play-off berth.
The Eagles came out of the gate firing against Western Mass, applying pressure with a couple quick near misses. Only 1:30 into the game, Luke Williams crossed a beautiful ball from the wing finding Amaury Nunes for the first goal of the game.
As the Eagles continued to dominate, not allowing Western Mass to settle into a rhythm, Bobby Shuttleworth, Western Mass' goal keeper was working overtime to keep his net free of goals.
Steward Cues, Eagles keeper, was tested in the 32 minute with a beautiful, bending corner kick attempt. With Western Mass beginning to find a rhythm the Eagles found a much needed second goal in stoppage time by Jorge Herrera which was set up by a back pass from Ben Page.
Eagles were up 2-0 at the half.
With the start of the second half the Eagles continued to control the speed of play, but with a window of chance for Western Mass, Steward Cues had a good save against a great crossed ball deflected off a Western Mass header.
Darren Toby, in the 52nd minute finds himself past the defense and lies off a pass to Ben Page who draws a big fowl in the box. A penalty kick is issued, in which Dustin Swinehart steps up for the shot. He misses the penalty shot and hit the cross bar. Keeper Bobby Shuttleworth is able to make the save off of the rebound.
Western Mass string together a few nice passes but Amaury Nunes gets in the way and causes a turn over. In the 59th minute he is able to carry the ball into the eighteen and get off a controlled shot around the keeper. His second goal of the match brings the score to 3-0.
Chris Lemons entered the game as a sub for Diego Martins in minute 63 and made his presence felt just 5 minute later as Jorge Herrera finds him at the top of the box. Chris unleashed a rocket into the upper ninety.
With the score 4-0 Jacob Coggins, a second half sub, takes his turn as Alex Woods leads him past the defensive line with a nice header. Jacob Coggins is able to outrun the keeper and punch the ball over his head for the fifth goal of the night.
The Eagles acquire 3 points off of a 5-0 final against Western Mass.
